Why should I join CAPA?

雖然鑽石吧高中華裔家長會中有許多家長同時也是鑽石吧華人聯誼協會（華協）會員，但是華裔家長會和華人聯誼協會是兩個完全不同的組織。華裔家長會是一個鑽石吧高中的組織，以幫助與服務華裔學生和家長以及促進與學校溝通和彼此了解為宗旨。我們為您提供各類有關教育和家庭的講座以 及學業上的輔助和諮詢等服務。華協是一個鑽石吧市的華人組織。
Although many CAPA members are also members of the Diamond Bar Chinese American Association (DBCAA); CAPA and DBCAA are two completely different organizations. CAPA of DBHS is a parent organized non-profit organization。 Our goal is to provide assistance to Chinese American students and parents and to promote communications among students, parents and the school. We also sponsor/provide seminars in various Education or Family Living related topics。 DBCAA is a city wide organization serving the Diamond Bar City Chinese American residence.

家長會每個月的常務會議都有財政報告，同時也會登在家長會的網站上提供會員查尋。 在為了讓家長會的運作更順利，於2002-2003年終的常務會議上決定自2003-2004學年開始，鑽石吧高中華裔家長會將收取$20.00的年費以資助每年的家長會開支。靠著這些經費，家長會每學期出版家長會簡報，主辦不同的座談會，聯誼會，每學期家長會必定和其它家長會一同贊助參與學校以及學區的所有大型的籌款活動，年終時並會和韓/非裔家長會合辦謝師筵，剩餘的金費全都捐贈給學校添置教材或設備或者其它能改進學生學習環境的項目。 從每年的會員會費和籌款活動，華裔家長會曾經捐贈過四萬元為電腦科技更新,兩千元為體育館錄影音響系統更新，以及2004年家長會捐贈了一萬兩千元為學校添置劇院的多媒體投影機。 目前這個投影機每周都會在課堂上，會議上或者學生表演會用到。
CAPA treasurer will provides monthly expenditures at the monthly CAPA board meetings, and included in the monthly meeting minutes for members review. In order to allow our Association to function smoothly and to provide more services to you, board members and attending members voted (at a 2002-2003 scheduled meeting) to collect an annual membership fee of $20 beginning in the 2003-2004 school year. With the money raised from the membership drive and special fundraiser, our Association is able to provide translated newsletters/school information, college preparation seminars, members' social events, and we partner with Korean and African American parents in coordinating the year-end Teachers Appreciation Luncheon. In addition, our Association took part in supporting most of the major activities and fundraising events at DBHS as well as the Walnut Valley School District. Through your membership fees and the generous donations of others, CAPA had donated $40,000 for computer technology upgrades, $2,000 for auditorium video/audio system upgrades, and most recently in 2004, $12,000 for a multimedia projection system in the theatre; which is currently being utilized by the media and performance art classes as teaching aid and supporting students/staff gathering several days of the week.

家長會一直都在改進與家長聯系的方法。 尤其在過去2年當中，如同科技推進到網絡世界, 華裔家長會也由傳統的郵寄方法先進到運用電子郵件為華裔家長會的主要通訊方式。這是目前最快和最經濟的通訊方式; 特別是當我們的公告資料裏有時間上的緊急性（例如學校的特殊活動，遲上課日期, 早放學日期）, 電子郵件能即時的傳送到家長的手上。
CAPA is always working on improving our communication to our members. Especially in the past 2 years, as the technology is advancing to the e-world, CAPA has also transitioned from postal mails to utilize electronic-mails for all our CAPA announcements. It is the quickest and most economic way of communicating to our members; especially when many of our announcements are last minute information/reminder (i.e. Special school events, late start or short days), this information can be delivered to our members immediately.

During member's registration, CAPA requests mailing address and email address. If an email address is provided by a member, we will include the email address in our email contact list, and all CAPA announcements will be sent out via email to all email addresses in our database. If no email address is provided, the mailing address is used for postal mails. However, we will only send out postal mails to CAPA's active members who did not provide an email address. There are several reasons why you have not heard from CAPA:

1. your email address in our database is incorrect
2. you are a CAPA active member, but you did not provide an email address and your mailing address in our database is incorrect
3. you are not a CAPA active member and CAPA does not have your correct email address
4. You did not add CAPA's email address (dbcapa@gmail.com) to your email contact list/address book; therefore, CAPA's email announcements were treated, by your email server, as 'junk mail' and were deleted before you read them.
5. $25 membership fee is good for 1 year membership. Our record shows that we did not receive your $25 membership fee for the current school year. And we don't have your correct email address. CAPA usually send out our monthly board member meeting minutes to our members once a month. If your email or postal mail was returned to CAPA, our grade level coordinators will try to contact you for correction. However, we may have missed you by accident, if you have not heard from CAPA in more than a month, please contact us to verify your email and mailing address. You can reach us via email (dbcapa@gmail.com) or through our grade level coordinators.

CAPA is the 1st DBHS parent group that launched our own website, directly linked to DBHS website. Our website address is dbcapa.org. You can find all kinds of information on CAPA, DBHS and school related information. We update our website with the latest changes in activity dates. Every year, CAPA also distribute CAPA Handbook, which contains board member names and contact information, activity and meeting dates, you can pick up a handbook at any of the CAPA activities throughout the year.

1.   During Back to School Night, teachers usually would provide office hours for students requiring additional help. Check with your daughter's Chemistry teacher for before school, lunch and after school tutoring.
2. Check with your daughter's GLC for student tutor recommendations (usually student who's completed the same class with high scores).  My daughter is taking AP Biology this year and her GLC recommended several 12th graders. We were able to select the one best fit my daughter's need.
3. There are a few tutoring schools around Diamond Bar that you can check them out.
4. Contact MSAC Chairperson of Chemistry for recommendation, Jenny Chen, 909-594-5611 x4933.  She will either provide you with a student in her class, or forward the request to the right professor for recommendation. This will probably take a while to get results.
5. Contact MSAC career placement center to open a job description.  909-594-5611 x4510. Effectiveness of this method may depend on your luck and timing.

CAPA of DBHS does not offer Chinese Schools. CAPA has often been mistaken for Diamond Bar Chinese American Association's (DBCAA) Chinese School which holds classes at the DBHS Campus on Saturdays. There are many ways for a parent to participate in his/her child's education. For a Chinese-speaking parent, the best way is to join the DBHS Chinese American Parent Association (DBHS CAPA). You can participate in our monthly meetings where we discuss information received from school and district and plan events to benefit Chinese parents and students. We publish our emails and newsletters in Chinese and English to serve all Chinese parents. 其實學校很需要義工，更歡迎家長幫忙，有些工作也只需簡單的英語會話。其中一個例子就是做監考助理。春季大考(加州高中畢業考，高程度測試考)時都需要很多監考助理幫忙老師監督考場秩序, 發考卷, 鉛筆及收考卷。 工作輕鬆又能了解大考時學校師生間的運作。 詳情請與 Jennifer Lin 聯絡 @ (909) 598-1368。
There are many areas in school that can use parent volunteers, and not too much English is required. One of these areas is Proctoring for the yearly Exams in Spring (CAHSEE: California High School Exit Exam, AP: Advanced Placement, IB: International Baccalaureate). All is required is for parents to help teachers monitor students, distribute exams, pencils, and collect answer sheets. It's an easy way of learning how the teachers and students are working together during this exam season. For more information on Proctoring, please contact Jennifer Lin @ (909) 598-1368.

在中國人的社會裡,碰到問題第一就是想到直接與最高層的主管溝通以便由上司施壓下屬而解決問題. 但在美國的社會裡,是講求公平的讓負責的主管能有機會以他 所能的範圍之內為您解決問題.如果問題解決的不甚滿意,才循規蹈矩的一層一層的請求上層主管協助. 在學校也是一樣,應該先與老師溝通,若老師無法為您解決問 題,才再與系主任,或是輔導主任（GLC)商量解決的辦法.不是不得已,才會需要校長的協 助. 但是輔導主任多數都能完美的為學生與家長解決問題,根本無需校長的介入.請別忘了,孩子的輔導主任是他的"在校父母",我們應該尊重學校的管理政策,和老師及輔導主任一起幫助孩子們成長與學習.
The Chinese culture is to go directly to the top ranking officer in order to solve a problem quickly. In America, the common practice is to step up the ranks properly to allow the supervisor(s) to resolve the problem for you prior to getting to the top. If you have an issue with your daughter's teacher, the 1st thing should be to discuss the issue directly with the teacher. If you are not satisfied with the teacher's response (or you have other reservations), then make an appointment with the Dean of the Department for that teacher or GLC. The GLC will most likely provide a satisfactory resolution that the Principal is rarely needed to get involved. This process will allow the GLC to perform his/her primary responsibility of assisting the students and parents and serve as your child's 'on-campus parent'.

Any parents are welcome to bring any issues to our monthly CAPA meetings so we can discuss and provide recommendations. Our monthly meetings are scheduled on 1st Thursday of the month (please refer to our website (dbcapa.org) for the next CAPA meeting)。 Keep in mind that sometimes our experiences are limited to our specific situations and may not be helpful in resolving your problem. CAPA is made up of volunteer parents. Our goal is to encourage communication among the Chinese students, parents and the school by relaying general school information and providing general interest seminars. Our parents are involved so we can learn more about the school, the teachers, and our students, and to help others by sharing our own experiences. However, the Walnut Valley Unified School District does have 2 Chinese Translators to serve the Chinese speaking families. They are District staffs who are familiar with the school policies and practices and can assist you in your individual problems. If required, they may be able to accompany you for a meeting with your GLC or school officials. It is best for you to contact a Chinese translator to request assistance in resolving any specific issues.
